"Put fear into my heart," she said, "so I don't have to feel the winter in my bones." So I made her fall in love with me. Patted her spine until it melted into my hands, kissed her lips while the leaves fell from the trees, the breeze separating her rib cage. I lit a candle between her lungs, ignited each fragile inhale. I loved her before the first snowfall, before her hair sheltered her ears. "I'm afraid of losing you," she said. Her body was on fire.
